As a first time homeowner, a lot of emotions come with it. Throughout the process of buying, you never feel like it will actually happen. You leave your old home in shambles while you hope for the new one to take you in with open arms.  We had so much work to do from the minute of closing to make the house livable before our first night sleeping there. Changing our doorknob felt like a representation of putting down a flag on our new piece of land. One thing any new homeowner can do to feel like their new home is their own is to change their locks. It symbolizes that the new steward of the home is ready to take care of it. It also made me feel more safe and matched with the design that I wanted for the sunroom/playroom.

Each time I have worked with @stoneharborhardware I feel like I have been welcomed into a family. It only made sense to me to outfit our first home with a new doorknob and lockset. I used the highland entry knob in matte black with a matching swinging door guard to keep Vienna from running out the back door to play on her swing set. We don’t have a fence yet so this added sense of security helps. The door also did not have a deadbolt so the latch felt needed.

When I first took off the old knob, I noticed the inside of the door was crumbling. The hole wasn’t totally bored out, it was chiseled to fit the exact knob. The old solid wood door needed to be fitted to the new one so carefully I also used a hammer and a chisel…mimicking the owner of the house for 60 years before me. I didn’t want to use the bit for my drill to make a hole in case I messed it up. We did not want to spend money on a new door and I liked the glass panes…I just wanted to put up sheer curtains so I felt less exposed.

Our front door is also very solid and very old. The latchkey is painted over and there is no key so we can only open it from the inside. I didn’t want to open a can of worms and replace the front door since we don’t use it as our main entrance. So changing the locks for the back porch door we use as our entrance made sense.

I thought it would be fun to paint the door red. I always liked a red door on a house but never really like the color red in my own design. But the sunroom trim and the door definitely changed that. A new home calls for a new style.

Someone reminded me that it was a rite of passage to change the locks on a new house. The phrase echoed in my head, I wondered how I didn’t think of that before. But a rite it is. A ceremonial act to show love for the place you call home.
